On Pain

PASSAGE Choose.
Photography, then, is an expression of our peculiarly cruel way of seeing. Ultimately, it is a kind of evil eye, a type of magical possession. one senses this very clearly in places where a different cultic substance is still active.  The moment a city like Mecca can be photographed, it falls into the colonial sphere( P.40)
This passage relates to the Dada era or Dada Movement, Photomontage was used to create picture to capture the stupidy and violence of the time. Dadaist used photomontage to gasp the attention of their audience, to break rules and to stretch the boundaries of their art.
I choose this passage because photography is used to express ideas. photography is used to display images in an abstract way that allows people to see things differently than they would normally in their everyday life. photography is used to capture historical events of positive or negative environments.

  1. You are definitely right about photography. It is used to express to the world what other cannot express or see. Violence, atrocities, and abuse was famously depicted in paintings and photographs during this era in order to show the world the societies that were brutally hurt and abuse.
